this is a little blurb I wrote for a site called SoulPancake, which aims to get people talking about Big Questions: on tolerance, religion, creativity, and so on.

I thought it would make a decent return to LiveJournal. I've been gone a while, and I still don't know if I'm "returning for real" -- I do know that I won't be reading as much as I was. I simply don't have the time in my day, as I'm taking care of homeschooling our daughter Ariann (who is now 10), as well as cleaning up the house.

About which I have one thing to say: 13 years of accumulated crap and dirt is not going to go away overnight. *nod*

Anyway, on to the bigger question:
do we really NEED religion? I think any person able to think for themselves well enough doesn't really need it. The way I'm feeling about it right now, religions have been a way for the enlightened (priests, mullahs, imams, bodhisattvas, whatever) to pass down their ideas about god and "what god said" to the masses.

In other words, religions have obviated the need for "the masses" to think for themselves. Religions tell people what god said, so they don't have to interpret the words and feelings themselves. They don't have to THINK for themselves.

That said, I think there is a god. I think all polytheistic type gods are facets of this God. In that way they are all true, all correct, all mirrors of the cultures that created them.

There is a god, but there are many ways to reach god. There are as many ways as there are people on this Earth; your way is just as valid as my way, so long as you're not hurting anyone, and it's not my place to judge the way anyone else attains godhead. And thus is tolerance born.
